Why Jesus?

Summary: Why Jesus? Jesus frees us from the bondages that Adam first introduced--bondages of sin, curses, and demons. He shows us how to live according to God's will. He is the first of a new breed of human being, born again, and free from sin and its consequences.

Why Jesus? Why the cross? Why did he go to Calvary? Many religions agree that we need to do good things. There is only one that includes someone dying for our sins. Why is that?

Genesis 1:1-3:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.

God said. He spoke Words. John 1:14:

And The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

God spoke Words and those words manifested themselves in the physical. He asked there to be light and there was light. Jesus is the light. Jesus is the Word made flesh. John 8:58: "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"

God makes the world beautiful and makes man as co-ruler. He makes man lord over all of the beasts of the Earth, He appoints man over the Garden, He enjoys fellowship with man. He provides a wife for fellowship. The world submits to man. Man submits to God.

The serpent, however, says submission constrains you. Man rebelled aginst God. He took up authority against God (in the free will God gave him), and sided with the devil. People face the same choice every day - submit to God or rebel against him. We have the free will to choose God or Satan. In Luke 4:5-7 Satan tempts Jesus with everything that was given to him as a result of man leaving the Garden of Eden.

So the question remains: "Why Jesus?" Jesus comes to solve and restore what was lost due to men's sins. Jesus came to solve problems:

  1. Disobedience. Jesus was completely obedient. In Gethsemane, he relinquished his own will for the will of his Father. By overcoming temptation, he makes a way for those who follow him to enter the same kind of life that He had. He was "crushed for our iniquities"
  2. Ignorance of God's will. Jesus enabled us to know the father's will and to act on it and follow it.
  3. Disease. Jesus cured us of all physical disease, pains of child birth, infirmities, sorrow, death, decay, and troubles that came as a result of being banished from the Garden. Therefore, cut off the things that lead to sin and follow Jesus. His sacrifice spans all time, all space, all people, and all eternity
  4. Demons. There are the same number of demons today that there were in Jesus' day. Why were so many being driven out back then? Jesus had such spiritual power. Jesus crushed the authority of Satan by being obedient to God. We have authority over all the winds, the water, and everything everywhere. For example, just a month ago, Brother Zach went on a 6 kilometer prayer walk in Southern Africa, an area that has recently been aflicted with a severe drought. As he took off on his flight home, the rain started. Mark 16:17: "In my name they will drive out demons."
  5. Curses. Genesis 3:14-19: curses came as a result of our sin. "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground." Now we live for Christ, he provides for us. We no longer eat by the sweat of our brow. God puts you to work to be a servant to him, not to secure a future for yourself. We are no longer cursed to go from dust to dust. Rather, those who believe will never die. Life everlasting means that we live on earth and are promoted to heaven, walking closely with God. God's children are exiles on Earth for a short time and then return to him.

Jesus is God's complete answer to sin and sin's consequences. He takes away our sins, he delivers us from: diseases, demons, curses, living without God, eating by the sweat of our own brow, and death itself.

Why Jesus? Why not an angel? Only God can take away Satan's authority and restore his dominion. Jesus comes as the second Adam. He opens a new breed of human being, those who are "born again" and are free from sin and sin's consequences. This is available to any Christian, but it takes faith and seeking to obey His commands and to experience His promises. Wherever the curse of sin is found, people shall be freed.
